Frequently Asked Questions
Smart Litter Box Monitor System
Most Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor track and how does it help me manage my cat’s health?
The monitor tracks multiple data points and uses artificial intelligence to accurately track your cat’s (or cats’) weight, as well as the number of visits, waste type, visit duration and time of day. You can find this data within the Events tab and the Cats tab of the Petivity app. Petivity also tracks when the litter box is scooped, making it easy to know when the box needs to be cleaned.
When Petivity notices meaningful changes in weight or litter box behavior, it alerts you via the app. While Petivity is not intended to diagnose your cat, it is designed to learn your cat’s habits and alert you to changes that could be signs of a health condition requiring veterinary diagnosis. If you receive such an alert, contact your veterinarian.

Is the Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor a Litter Box?
No – the Smart Litter Box Monitor is a monitoring device that sits underneath your existing litter box, allowing it to fit seamlessly into almost any environment with minimal disruption to your cats. See if your litter box is compatible here.
Does the Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor come with iOS and Android mobile apps?
I have more than one litter box. How many Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitors do I need?
It is important to have one monitor for each litter box in the home. This will ensure the data and insights the system provides are as accurate and complete as possible. The data from all your monitors will appear in the Petivity app, so the system will track litter box activity no matter which box your cat uses. Petivity will even tell you which litter box your cat prefers in your emailed Insight Reports.
Does Petivity work with multiple cats? If so, how many?
Yes, Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor works with multiple cats, without the need for a special collar or chip. To differentiate between your cats, Petivity will need your help to train its AI (artificial intelligence). Through the first few weeks of use, you’ll be notified when a litter box event needs more information from you. After confirming at least eight events per cat, the frequency of these prompts will decrease. If your cats are close in weight, you may need to label more than eight events to help the monitor learn to distinguish between them.
Please note that the Petivity system’s performance has been validated in households that have no more than five cats. We cannot guarantee performance in households with more than five cats, and some aspects of the system, like the insight reports, will not be available. For more info on how Petivity works in multi-cat homes, read our guide on How Petivity Tracks Multiple Cats.
Will the Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor work with my litter box?
Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor is designed to work with most litter boxes and litter pans. The exceptions are triangular-shaped or self-cleaning litter boxes or litter boxes larger than 16” x 21”. The litter box should be sized and shaped to fit completely on the monitor.
Can others in my home, or other people who care for my cats, use the Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor app?
To maintain the integrity and accuracy of your Petivity data, it’s important to manage your monitors from a single device.
How is the Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor powered?
You can choose from one of two options for powering your Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor: use either 6 AA-size batteries (included) or the included wall charger and cord. The monitor only requires one source of power, so choose whichever is most convenient for you. Do not use the batteries and wall charger together. Within the Petivity app, you can see the battery life for each monitor or, if using the power cord, see if each monitor is properly plugged in.
If using the power cord:
- Please note that any use of a power cord carries risks such as cats or other animals chewing cables or equipment, electrical shock, and tripping hazards. If you’re using the power cord to power the monitor, check for any evidence that your cat or other pets have been chewing on the cord. If your cat is a chewer or you see any evidence of chewing, we recommend using battery power.
If using batteries:
- Please use Alkaline AA batteries only. Do not use rechargeable batteries, or lithium or other non-Alkaline batteries, as battery life may not be accurately represented in the app
Where should I put my Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor?
- The monitor works best in an indoor, climate-controlled environment.
- When placing the monitor in your home, ensure it is placed at least 1 inch away from all walls or other obstacles. Placing the monitor next to high vibration items like a washer or dryer or in high traffic areas may affect the performance of the monitor.
- The monitor is designed to function best on a smooth, level, hard surface. If using a mat or placing the monitor on carpeting, raise the adjustable feet to the highest level to ensure the monitor is not touching the carpet, mat or other flooring surface. Uneven monitors may cause a disruption in data. We recommend doing a wobble test by lifting the litter box off the monitor and pressing on one corner of the monitor. If there is any movement, adjust the feet to the highest level or move to a different surface to ensure the monitor is balanced.
- The Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor utilizes Wi-Fi and should be placed within reasonable range of a router.
How do I set up my monitor?
- Install the Petivity App.
- Prepare for Set-Up. Ensure that your phone is connected to your home Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth is enabled. You can do this in the “Settings” menu of your phone. Have your home Wi-Fi password handy.
- Choose a Power Source. You have two options for powering your monitors. Use either the supplied power cord or six AA batteries. Choose whichever is most convenient for you.
- Set Up Your Monitor and Cat Profile(s) in the App. Open the Petivity App and follow the set-up instructions to complete your monitor set-up and create an account for your cats.
How do I sync (or add) a monitor to the app?
Make sure your monitor is powered on (plugged into the wall or batteries inserted) and that Bluetooth is active on your phone. Have your Wi-Fi password ready. The app will instruct you to wake your monitor. If the blue light on the monitor is not already flashing, press and hold the button for about 2 seconds until the light turns blue, then release the button. The blue light should continue to flash and you will have 60 seconds to begin the onboarding process in the app. Within the Petivity app, select your monitor from the list. Your monitor will be named SLBM-XXXX, where XXXX are the last four digits of your monitor’s serial number. Scan for your Wi-Fi network. Make sure you are connecting to the 2.4GHz router band (you may have to disable the 5GHz router band to do so). Enter your Wi-Fi password (if applicable).
What do the different status light colors next to the button mean?
Yellow Light (Flashing) – Monitor is Starting Up
You’ll see this light when the monitor is first powered on or reset. It means that your monitor is performing tests and getting ready to operate. This light may flash from 20-60 seconds depending on how long it takes to connect to Wi-Fi and reach the internet.
Blue Light – Bluetooth Mode
You’ll see this light during the monitor set-up process. It means that the monitor is ready to connect to the app via Bluetooth. If your monitor is new, the light will start flashing automatically. Otherwise, put your monitor in Bluetooth mode by holding down the button until the light turns blue (about 2 seconds), then release it. If you wait too long, the app may direct you to hold the button again.
White Light – Reset
If you hold the button down for about 10 seconds, you’ll see the light turn blue and then eventually white. If you release the button while the light is white, you will reset your monitor. You’ll see a flashing yellow light next. If your monitor is upside-down, this will cause a factory reset, which clears all settings and data from the device. You’ll see the white light flash for about 30 seconds, followed by a flashing yellow light and finally, a flashing blue light.
Green Light – Good Wi-Fi Connection
A green light means that your Wi-Fi connection is good, and the monitor is able to connect to the internet. If everything is ok with your monitor after it powers on, You should see a green light (for 5 seconds) after the flashing yellow light. At any other time, give the status button a quick press and release. If the light turns green, it means the monitor’s last attempt to connect to Wi-Fi was a success.
Red Light (Flashing) – Bad Wi-Fi Connection
A red light means that your Wi-Fi connection might have a problem. It could mean that your Wi-Fi settings have changed and you need to update your monitor, that something is wrong with your home internet, or that something caused the Wi-Fi to disconnect unexpectedly the last time the monitor was online. When powering on the monitor, you may see a red light after the flashing yellow light if there was a problem. At any other time, give the status button a quick press and release. If the light flashes red, it means the monitor’s last attempt to connect to Wi-Fi had a problem. Note that even if you see a red light, indicating a Wi-Fi connectivity issue, the monitor is still collecting data on your cats, and you will be able to access this data once the Wi-Fi issue is resolved. The problem might resolve on its own, but if it continues, contact Support.
Purple Light – Low Battery/Device Error
If you see a flashing purple light while using battery power, your batteries are low. Replace the batteries or switch to powering your monitor using the provided power cord. If the light does not go away on its own or becomes a solid purple light, please contact Support for more assistance.

How does the Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor tell the difference between urination and defecation events?
Petivity’s smart algorithm is constantly looking for certain behaviors that indicate a defecation event is about to occur. It also factors in the weight of the output. The monitor is designed to be able to distinguish between urination and defecation from day one—however, if your cat demonstrates unique litter box behaviors or their stools are irregular, it may take more time. If your monitor is having trouble correctly identifying urination and defecation events, reach out to the Customer Support team by calling 866-979-2477 or filling out the Contact Us form on our Support page.

Will Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor work for monitoring indoor/outdoor cats?
The Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor is designed to work with cats who are exclusively indoors. If used with an indoor/outdoor cat, Petivity will be unable to see the full picture of that cat’s litter box activity. This may result in unnecessary or false alerts.
How do I know my monitor has power?
Although the monitor turns on automatically when plugged in or when operating on battery power, giving the button on the front a short, quick press will manually wake the device up. The LED light will display if the monitor is powered on. The different LED colors indicate the status of the monitor. Learn more about what each light color means here. Within the Monitor tab of the Petivity app, you can see the battery life for each monitor or, if using the power cord, see if each monitor is properly plugged in.
Can kittens use the Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor?
Kittens grow and change quickly, which means their weight and behavioral data change quickly, too. Occasionally, these changes can negatively affect the accuracy of your data or cause false alerts. For now, we don’t recommend using Petivity with kittens.

Do I need a special litter for Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor to work?

Do I need to reset the Petivity Smart Litter Box Monitor when I scoop or add litter? What if my cat kicks litter out of the box?
You don’t need to change anything about how you maintain the litter box. The system automatically gathers data throughout the day so it can account for common events like scooping or changing litter, or a cat kicking litter out of the box.
Does the monitor track when I scoop the litter box?
Yes, Petivity tracks scooping events in order to help you manage the maintenance of your box, and it also allows you to set scooping reminders. To help the monitor recognize when the box is being scooped, we recommend putting pressure on the scoop so Petivity will update the box status to clean.
